Thailand Leads the World in Fixed Broadband Internet Speeds
Thailand reached a major milestone in digital infrastructure by ranking first globally for fixed broadband internet speeds in December 2020, according to the Speedtest Global Index published by Ookla.
The country recorded an average download speed of 308.35 Mbps, moving ahead of Singapore, which had previously held the top position. Hong Kong completed the top three, while the global average download speed stood at 96.43 Mbps.

The Speedtest Global Index measures internet performance using millions of real-world tests conducted each month through Ookla’s Speedtest platform, one of the world’s leading internet speed benchmarking services.
Investment and Competition Drive Faster Broadband
Government officials credited Thailand’s success to years of investment in telecommunications infrastructure and strong competition among internet service providers. The expansion of nationwide fiber-optic networks has significantly improved broadband performance while making high-speed internet more affordable for households.
Industry analysts also pointed to the competitive landscape as a key driver. The entry of AIS Fibre into the home broadband market intensified competition, encouraging providers to accelerate fiber deployment and gradually replace aging ADSL infrastructure. As a result, consumers have benefited from faster internet packages at increasingly competitive prices.
Transition from ADSL to Fiber Networks
Despite the rapid rollout of fiber, some providers continued to serve customers through ADSL connections in certain areas during the period, highlighting that network modernization was still underway.
Broadband Subscriptions Continue to Grow
Thailand’s fixed broadband market continued to grow steadily, with household subscriptions rising from approximately 10.1 million in 2019 to an estimated 11 million in 2020, reflecting increasing demand for reliable, high-speed internet.
Mobile Internet Performance Also Improves
The country’s mobile internet performance also improved during the same period. Thailand climbed to 33rd place worldwide for mobile download speeds, recording an average of 51.75 Mbps, an increase of eleven positions from the previous month. Qatar ranked first globally, followed by the United Arab Emirates and South Korea.

Thailand’s achievement underscored the country’s growing reputation as one of Asia’s leading digital economies, supported by expanding connectivity, competitive pricing, and continued investment in modern telecommunications infrastructure.
